Ulster Democratic Committee Caucus Results

Saugerties Democratic Committee News

Last night was a monumental victory for the Ulster County Democratic Party. In contested races Julian Schriebman won 17,000-6000 and Ian Brody won 13,000-5000. Our new Executive Board that includes Karen Markisensis as VP and Stuart Fraser as secretary represents a great balance of personalities and experience.

Additionally, Kathy Mihm was elected at the Democratic Elections Commissioner for Ulster County.

This has been a very difficult battle over the last year or two and Saugerties proudly has been right in the middle of it. We had a tremendous turnout of our committee last night, even with illness, and pre-planned trips, we had 96% of our committee present.

We have seen tremendous changes in our town government and county committee due to a strong grassroots effort towards open, progressive government by all of you. It is my hope that a belief in "bottom-up" government will take Barack into the White House.

Once again I can only thank you for your energy and support.

Mike

Elect Mike Hein, Eat Pasta - Sept 25th

From Committeemember March S. Gallagher:

As you may know, Ulster County is about to change our form of government so instead of being governed solely by a legislative body, we will now have a County Executive accountable to the people who can be held responsible for problems (like the jail) in county government. I have been working to support Mike Hein’s campaign for County Executive. As Chair of the Industrial Development Agency I found Administrator Mike Hein to be a competent and intelligent person who is not afraid to make real changes to Ulster County government, even if it means changing the status quo.

He and I worked together to introduce performance-based funding for Ulster County Development Corporation- so if they don’t perform, they don’t get funded. We also made joint recommendations to consolidate many of the county’s economic development functions under a single roof. Mike has done other great things, like reduced the County’s employee healthcare costs by millions of dollars. If we had Mike as County Executive, the jail debacle would never have happened. Come meet him and learn about some of the things he has already accomplished as County Administrator.

His opponent is well financed and as much as we may dislike our campaign finance system, the best way to get the right candidate elected, is to fundraise so that he can be competitive.

Please join me at Gisiano’s on the September 25th for dinner, to meet Mike and put our money together for the future of our county. I would like to see 20 of my good friends and family join me at this event – even if going to political fundraisers is not something you usually do. You can call the reservation number below or tell me if you want to come with me. If you cannot attend, please consider sending a donation directly to Mike Hein’s campaign at www.heinforexec.com

Thanks for your support and for reading this.

Public Input Sought For Saugerties Open Space Plan

The Town of Saugerties and its Conservation Advisory Commitee will be sponsoring a public workshop on Monday, September 22nd to solicit community input to guide the development of an open space plan. The workshop will be led by Behan Planning Associates and Community planning consulting firm hired by the town.

Creating an open space plan that is supported by the community will help Saugerties maintain natural and agricultural resources that are important to the Town's quality of life.

The workshop will be held at the Saugerties Senior Center on Market Street. It will begin at 6:30pm with an informal open house where participants can view inventory maps and talk to town representatives and consultants. A formal presentation will start at 7pm, followed by small group discussions.

For more information, contact Leeanne Thornton from the Town of Saugerties, or Melissa Barry, a project manager with Behan Planning Associates at (518) 583-4335 or Brian Sawchuk 246-7392, CAC Chairman.
