Background Information
The vitality and stability of any government depend upon the public's
confidence in the integrity of elected and appointed officials.
Whenever the public perceives a conflict between private
interests and public duties of any government officer or employee, that
confidence is imperiled. Governments have the duty both to provide
their citizens with standards by which they determine whether public
duties are being faithfully performed, and to apprise their officers and
employees of the behavior which is expected of them while conducting
their public duties. The purpose of any ethics law is to provide a way
of assuring that standards of ethical conduct and financial disclosure
requirements for government officers and employees are clear,
consistent, uniform in their application, and enforceable, as well as to
provide county officers and employees with advice and information
concerning possible conflicts of interest which might arise in the
conduct of their public duties.
The old Ulster County Ethics Law was completely rewritten over the last
two years by the five member Board of Ethics with considerable input
from Lorraine Rosenberg and Lanny Walter. The new version has been
reviewed and revised by the Ulster County Attorney and is presently
being evaluated by the Efficiency, Reform and Governmental Affairs
Committee.

Ethics Law to be Discussed
Thursday, November 8, 2007
Thank You!
I have tremendous admiration for those who throw their hat in
the political arena, whatever the result. Theodore Roosevelt,
said it best(with some changes to support gender neutrality):
It is not the critic who counts, not the one who points out
how the strong person stumbled, or where the doer of deeds
could have done them better. The credit belongs to the person
who's actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and
sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs and comes up
short again and again, who knows the great enthusiasms, the
great devotion and spends themself in a worthy cause; who
best knows at the end the triumph of high achievement, and
who at the worst, if they fail, at least fails while darring
greatly; so that this place shall never be with those cold
and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat.
Thanks to Greg Helsmoortel, Fred Costello Jr., Leeanne
Thornton, Jim Uhl 111, Gary Bischoff, Josh Boughton, Bob
Cappiello Jr, Bonni Nechemias and Jonathan Sennett.
The next meeting of the Saugerties Democratic Committee will
be on Tuesday, November 27 at 7p.m. at the Senior Center
small room. We'll review the election results and plan our
Holiday Party scheduled for Tuesday, December 11th at Total
Tennis (time to be announced)

STATE'S LARGEST LAW ENFORCEMENT ASSOCIATION ENDORSES SENENTT FOR DA
New York State Fraternal Order of Police's 20,000 Members Back Jonathan Sennett for Ulster County District Attorney
The New York State Fraternal Order of Police, the oldest and largest association of law enforcement professionals with over 20,000 statewide, has endorsed Jonathan Sennett for Ulster County District Attorney.
"As police professionals who most experience and witness the trauma and effects of criminal behavior upon our fellow citizens, we understand, all too well, the significance of dedicated public servants as you who possess the courage and compassion to promote the confidence in our government and courts," said Charles J. Caputo, president of the New York State Fraternal Order of Police Empire State Lodge.
"This endorsement is proof that members of law enforcement agree with my stance on tough prosecution. Drug dealers, gang members and anyone who commits violent, offensive or criminal acts against another person in Ulster County will face tough and appropriate prosecution," said Sennett, the Democratic and Working Families candidate.
Sennett's crime fighting and prosecuting platform includes prosecuting cases more efficiently and effectively, which involves sending an assistant district attorney to the scene of major crimes. "This will mean reviewing evidence and talking to witnesses with the goal of bringing stronger cases into the courtroom," said Jonathan Sennett.
Sennett has five years experience as a prosecutor in the Bronx as well as five years experience as a defense attorney in the Hudson Valley. "I believe I have the most relevant and current experience of all of the candidates for this office." said Sennett.
Sennett has also been endorsed by U.S. Senator Charles Schumer, U.S. Senator Hillary Clinton, Governor Eliot Spitzer, New York State Assemblyman Kevin Cahill and Ulster County Legislator Tracey Bartels. Other endorsements include: Hudson Valley Area Labor Federation, CSEA Local 856 and SEIU Local 200 United.

MEET THE CANDIDATES EVENTS
In an effort to reach out to citizens and voters, Ulster County Legislature candidates Gary Bischoff, Josh Boughton, Bob Cappiello and Bonni Nechemias are hosting two “Meet the Candidates Coffee Events”. Citizens have the opportunity to meet and chat with the candidates. The Coffee Events will be held on Friday, November 2 at Dave’s Coffee Haus, and on Monday, November 5 at Mt. View Market, both from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. The candidates will buy a cup of coffee for all regular patrons and anyone interested in meeting the candidates.
Two events are scheduled. Each event runs from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.
* Friday, November 2, Dave’s Tobacco Outfitters and Coffee Roast Haus, 107 Partition Street, Saugerties
* Monday, November 5, Tammy’s Mt. View Market, 322 Blue Mountain Road, County Rt. 35, Saugerties
Gary Bischoff said, “These ‘meet the candidates’ events are a great opportunity for voters to get to know us and to tell us what issues concern them, or just chat. We are interested in learning what issues you are concerned about. Please stop by on Friday and Monday morning. There may be other candidates and elected officials that stop by.”
Bonni Nechemias added, “With over twenty-one thousand people in this legislative district, it is impossible for us to get around to meet everyone. We reached out to as many people as possible, but we haven’t been able to make it to every home in the district. We look forward to meeting as many people as possible on Friday and Monday in an informal, friendly setting. Stop by between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. for a coffee and some conversation.”
These events are open to the public, and everyone is urged to stop in for a chat and a free coffee. For more information, on these events and information on the issues facing Ulster County, go to www.gary4ulster.com or www.saugertiesdems.org.
Gary Bischoff, Josh Boughton, Bob Cappiello and Bonni Nechemias are Democrats running for election to the Ulster County Legislature.
